MICHAEL FREUND: Ezekiel is commanded by God to take two sticks. On one, he is to write "For Judah," and on the other "For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim." Then comes the crucial instruction: "Bring them together into one stick so that they become one in your hand" (37:17). Ezekiel's vision is not one of uniformity. The two sticks do not cease to be what they are. Judah remains Judah; Joseph remains Joseph. Unity does not erase difference – it sanctifies and elevates it by placing it within a larger shared destiny.

Ketriel Blad: In other words, in order for a total restoration to take place, the restored Ephraimites from among the nations will have to become Jewish, in the legal sense of the word, thus accepting the Jewish authorities and becoming obedient to Jewish halachah. In the prophecy of Ezekiel 37:19 the Hebrew text can be understood as HaShem giving Yehuda's stick the function of being over Ephraim's stick and this way both sticks will become one. This teaches us that the Ephraimite movement that comes from heaven cannot rise apart from the Jewish people without submission to the Jewish leaders' authority. This is not for all the gentiles.

Farrah Fidler: After months of consideration, I finally signed up for nail school with the Yullia Beauty School in Tel Aviv. On January 16 I had my first class. This may sound cheesy, but it was a humbling experience.

For about seven years I have had a huge interest in, fascination of, and love for nail art. Once I had my first Japanese 3D nail art manicure at Valley Nails, there was no turning back. Of course I couldn’t afford frequent $50 manicures (which was a lot back then, and this was for my natural nails!), but I could buy acrylic powder and liquid and work on learning how to make 3D bows and other designs.

As nail art trends have changed, incorporating elaborate charms, hand-painted art with intricate lines, and gel polish opening up a whole other world, my focus had been on the additions that enhance the beauty of a manicure, and not on the manicure itself.
So I decided it was important to get back to the basics and learn how to give a quality manicure, with a single color, as without the foundation for a long-lasting manicure, what good are all the embellishments?
It’s been 5 weeks since I started my manicure course, and I must say that I have come a long way. From being afraid to cut cuticles, to at times polishing with a shaky hand, this course has helped me to be more confident in my work. I now know the proper way to file, buff, push and cut cuticles, and polish, resulting in beautiful manicures. And now I feel it’s time to get back to making those manicures even more fun for the ladies of Tel Aviv.
I’m looking forward to sharing my new creations with you! I’ll post them here and on my Instagram and Facebook page.

Ana Marie Pamintuan: Israel’s Ambassador Ephraim Ben Matityau visited The STAR

Israel is Innovation | F6S: In partnership with the Embassy of Israel and the Municipality of Tel Aviv, we are pleased to inform you that applications to represent the Philippines in the upcoming DLD Tel Aviv Digital Conference on September 6-12, 2015 are now open for startup founders, disruptors and inventors. Airfare and hotel accommodations of the chosen winner will be accounted for.
Ana Marie Pamintuan: On Thursday last week, he said it took him three and a half hours to go to Tarlac, and five hours to come back, with half of that time spent battling Metro Manila traffic.
But he’s happy with his current posting, after about five years as head of the Overseas Development Projects and PPP Bureau for MASHAV, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation.
A woman mentor told him that the Philippines is founded on four pillars: food, music, dance, taking pictures, and the Filipino smile.
The Israelis aren’t the only ones who find the ready Filipino smile unique. Chile’s former ambassador to Manila, Roberto Mayorga, was so captivated that he launched his embassy’s “Calidad Humana” and “Smiles for the World” project, telling anyone who cared to listen that the smile was the Filipino brand.
Israelis appreciate the Philippines’ assistance to Jews in their hour of need.

  • The UN soldiers at Cafe Anan in the Golan Heights have a rectangular hole in the sleeves of their uniforms where their national flags should be. They’re not eating or drinking anything, but are sitting bolt upright at the tables, staring at each other instead of the view. You don’t know what language they speak; you’ve been there for three hours and they haven’t said a word.
  • There is a sign at the old city of Nazareth that says “DID YOU KNOW THAT JESUS WAS A MUSLIM?” As you progress through the city, you find more: “DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR FAVORITE SPICE GIRL WAS A MUSLIM?” “DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPLE WAS A MUSLIM?” “DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU WERE A MUSLIM?”
  • you’re on your way back home from azrieli. youre waiting for a train to netanya. it’s been hours and hours and the train is not here. you ask a bypasser, dressed in all black, “excuse me, do you know when the train to netanya will be here?” there is silence. he stares at you with big, sad eyes and hands you a small keychain bible. he simply answers with “the train will come when the messiah does.”
  • You sit in the Azrieli Mall, drinking a coffee and watching the soldiers. Some of their shoulder tags have leaves on them. Some of their shoulder tags have flying snakes on them. Some of their shoulder tags have two hands cradling an eyeball on them. Some of their shoulder tags have the skeleton of a mountain goat on them. Some of their shoulder tags have a pair of eyes crying blood on them. Some of their shoulder tags have a picture of your childhood home on them, with your parents and dog standing outside. Those soldiers have orange berets and carry very large guns.
