MICHAEL FREUND: Ezekiel is commanded by God to take two sticks. On one, he is to write "For Judah," and on the other "For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim." Then comes the crucial instruction: "Bring them together into one stick so that they become one in your hand" (37:17). Ezekiel's vision is not one of uniformity. The two sticks do not cease to be what they are. Judah remains Judah; Joseph remains Joseph. Unity does not erase difference – it sanctifies and elevates it by placing it within a larger shared destiny.

Ketriel Blad: In other words, in order for a total restoration to take place, the restored Ephraimites from among the nations will have to become Jewish, in the legal sense of the word, thus accepting the Jewish authorities and becoming obedient to Jewish halachah. In the prophecy of Ezekiel 37:19 the Hebrew text can be understood as HaShem giving Yehuda's stick the function of being over Ephraim's stick and this way both sticks will become one. This teaches us that the Ephraimite movement that comes from heaven cannot rise apart from the Jewish people without submission to the Jewish leaders' authority. This is not for all the gentiles.

Yossef Carmel: Menashe had two wives, one who was Jewish and one who was Aramaic, as it says in Divrei Hayamim [I:7:14]. His descendants from his Jewish wife received their portion in the Land on the western side. His descendants from the Aramaic wife [Machir, father of Gilad] had to settle for the eastern portion, along with Reuven and Gad.

Ari Kahn: According to the Midrash, Yosef uses his most trusted confidant, his eldest son Menashe, to set the plot in action, to create the situation, relay messages and serve as his aide.

Ari Kahn: The Netziv suggested that the tribe of Menashe was not interested in staying outside Israel. Rather, Moshe asked them to do so because he knew that the other tribes would need Torah leadership. Menashe’s inheritance east of the Jordan was not allotted to them in response to their own request. Moshe initiated the move in an attempt to insure the integrity and continuity of the other two tribes.

Yair Barkai: Moses gave the half-tribe of Manasseh territory across the Jordan in order to be sure the Reubenites and Gadites would be prevented from breaking off from the rest of their brethren who inherited in the western part of the country; just as the goblet that Manasseh had placed in Benjamin’s sack, upon orders from his father Joseph, was intended to make sure the brothers were indeed completely united. In other words, the half-tribe of Manasseh served as the connecting link, joining the Israelite tribes on both sides of the Jordan.

A. Leib Scheinbaum: On the side opposite to the eastern camp, to the west, under the degel of Efraim, were the tribes of Efraim, Menashe and Benyamin. Efraim and Menashe essentially represented Shevet Yosef. Based upon Yaakov Avinu’s blessing to his sons prior to his demise, Horav Hirsch suggests that Efraim and Menashe were to develop greatness and might. Bravery would be their primary attribute, which would be a wonderful supplement to Yehudah in the east in terms of national welfare. Regrettably, history indicates that instead of complementing Yehudah, the house of Yosef opposed their leadership, catalyzing a tragic rift in Klal Yisrael. Instead of planting their degel/standard behind Yehudah, they chose to go to the forefront and claim leadership. When they broke the G-d-given formation, they brought ruin upon themselves and all the other tribes that had attached themselves to them.

When I was young I was Achilles
It was excellence, honor, bravery, and blood,
All played out on the stage of the world.
Now I am Odysseus, a voyager, a traveler for travel's sake.
As if something was forgotten, I go East.
The star of the play now is the Earth itself,
Ireland to Istanbul.
In the beginning and at the end there was light.
The beauty of light finds a room in us.
What is it all but luminous?
