MICHAEL FREUND: Ezekiel is commanded by God to take two sticks. On one, he is to write "For Judah," and on the other "For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim." Then comes the crucial instruction: "Bring them together into one stick so that they become one in your hand" (37:17). Ezekiel's vision is not one of uniformity. The two sticks do not cease to be what they are. Judah remains Judah; Joseph remains Joseph. Unity does not erase difference – it sanctifies and elevates it by placing it within a larger shared destiny.

Ketriel Blad: In other words, in order for a total restoration to take place, the restored Ephraimites from among the nations will have to become Jewish, in the legal sense of the word, thus accepting the Jewish authorities and becoming obedient to Jewish halachah. In the prophecy of Ezekiel 37:19 the Hebrew text can be understood as HaShem giving Yehuda's stick the function of being over Ephraim's stick and this way both sticks will become one. This teaches us that the Ephraimite movement that comes from heaven cannot rise apart from the Jewish people without submission to the Jewish leaders' authority. This is not for all the gentiles.

אָשֵׁר‬

ABARIM PUBLICATIONS: Shomer [spelled שומר] is mentioned in the Genealogy of Asher, as the son of Heber [1 Chronicles 7:32]. In 7:34 is mentioned a Shemer, which is the same name but pronounced slightly different.

Note that שמור [shamor] is the modern Hebrew word for Fennel and is clearly derived from this same form. The Greek word for this plant is μαραθον [Marathon], from whence comes the name Μαραθων [Marathon], which would literally mean "covered with Fennel".

The Battle of Marathon [490 BC] was one of the most decisive battles in Human History. Had the Persians defeated the Greeks, Greece would have stopped to develop freely and there would have been no Plato, Socrates or Aristotle, no Greek Democracy, Mathematics, Poetry and all that, and no European Renaissance. These things would possibly, or even probably, have arisen independently of the Greeks, but the Modern World would certainly have looked wholly different. The Gospel would have been written in Persian, and would not contain its many signature reference to Greek Mythology and Homer. Even Jesus Christ would not have been called Jesus Christ.

ELIEZER MELAMED: Bnei Gershon carried the covering of the Tabernacle – its tapestries, the over-tent and roof, and the enclosure’s hangings. The outer covering of the mishkan is also very important. True, the primary interest is what goes on inside the Tabernacle through the use of the vessels, but all of the vessels received their stimulus from their surroundings. 
In other words, the Tabernacle’s vessels allude to ohr ha’penimi [the inner-light], and the Tabernacle’s tapestries allude to ohr makif [surrounding light]. In order to understand this concept, it must first be explained that G-d’s light [life-force] with which He illuminates the world, is divided into two: ohr penimi, and ohr makif. The comprehensible portion is the ohr penimi, which we are able to assimilate in our thoughts and feelings, and actually guides our lives. 
The portion that is beyond our ability to comprehend acts as an ohr makif, and although we are unable to encompass it, nevertheless, it envelops us and has a decisively influential inspiration on our lives. Indeed, the Tabernacle’s tapestries were especially beautiful, giving expression to matters that are beyond our comprehension, but envelop and surround us, offering us inspiration. 
One of the tasks of the Levites was to sing and play music at the time sacrifices were performed. Songs give expression to a longing for something beyond our perception. Kehat deal with the comprehensible, while bnei Gershon express the longing for what is beyond the explicable. Even their name alludes to this: Gershon from the Hebrew word ger [stranger], for man is like a stranger in this world, his soul longing for closeness to G-d and Divinity. These yearnings are expressed in song.
