MICHAEL FREUND: Ezekiel is commanded by God to take two sticks. On one, he is to write "For Judah," and on the other "For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim." Then comes the crucial instruction: "Bring them together into one stick so that they become one in your hand" (37:17). Ezekiel's vision is not one of uniformity. The two sticks do not cease to be what they are. Judah remains Judah; Joseph remains Joseph. Unity does not erase difference – it sanctifies and elevates it by placing it within a larger shared destiny.

Ketriel Blad: In other words, in order for a total restoration to take place, the restored Ephraimites from among the nations will have to become Jewish, in the legal sense of the word, thus accepting the Jewish authorities and becoming obedient to Jewish halachah. In the prophecy of Ezekiel 37:19 the Hebrew text can be understood as HaShem giving Yehuda's stick the function of being over Ephraim's stick and this way both sticks will become one. This teaches us that the Ephraimite movement that comes from heaven cannot rise apart from the Jewish people without submission to the Jewish leaders' authority. This is not for all the gentiles.

Rafi DeMogge: I'm strongly convinced that the primary determinant of pro-Israel sentiment or lack thereof in the U.S. today is the strength of religious (typically Christian) belief, and not any particular Israeli policy. I stress these points because if I'm right about the long-term trend—that the decline in American religiosity is linked to a decline in support for Israel—then the policy implications for Israel don't follow conventional wisdom.

SIGAL ELIYAHU: Patience is required to express your deepest desires and dreams. Turning inward through meditation, yoga, or martial arts can help restore balance.

Shoshannah Brombacher: Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children, and gave him a beautiful and precious present: a coat of many colors.
The Coat of Many Colors by Thomas Blackshear II: I think we have no concept of how Jesus Christ actually looks; therefore, I have not clearly indicated His features here. Because He is Lord, He represents all the people of the world. On His coat are flags of the nations and fabrics of the cultures of the world. All the colors of the coat represent the sin that He took on Himself on our behalf. The white robe under the coat represents His pureness, His being totally without sin. The golden sash is referred to in Scripture as being worn by royalty. He is truly Lord of All!

Jonathan-Simon Sellem: We think back to our beheaded Thai workers and our Nepalese brutally murdered, as if they were Israelis, as if they were Jews. To be honest, in my eyes, they are. They are like us, they suffer like us, with us, and for us.

TULY WEISZ: Hebrew Prophets call explicitly for a day when non-Jews will turn towards the Bible. A Torah study revolution will not merely reverse the declining trends when it comes to the millennial generation, it will pave the way for true world peace, the ultimate spiritual solution for the next millennium.

AlHaTorah.org: Josephus also relates how, even in his own time, it was a custom for people to take their household idols when emigrating. Ibn Ezra says more explicitly (and more radically) that Rachel (and the other wives and children) had learned idolatrous worship from her father and had not yet totally forsaken it.

"This is what the LORD says: 'A small voice is heard in Ramapoc, drowning and great gasping, Virginia Millano Evangelista Fabro~Rivera working overtime for her children and refusing to rest because they are Persian Exiles'" (Jeremiah 31:15, New International Version).

YOSEF ROSEN: Asher is the new Joseph, a new “tribal favorite” to incense his brotherly tribes

JOEL H. GOLOVENSKY: Wanting so desperately to belong, Joseph scrupulously paid respect to the elite. He married into it and protected it, making sure to exempt the clergy from taxation and interference. Joseph changed his name, dressed as an Egyptian and conformed to all society’s customs and deportment. His own brothers could not recognize him, and his father could not identify his sons as Hebrews.
Joseph’s story in Egypt did not turn out well. It was not a dream. What is happening today in the US, within and without the American Jewish community, must awaken us all to its danger. Assimilation never ends well for us.

Shlomo Skinner: Rabbi Steinsaltz explains it this way: The blessing is for Joseph's children. A blessing for the children is also a blessing bestowed on the father.

YISSOCHER FRAND: Yosef’s philosophy was to be holy and separated – only to G-d alone! (bilti l’Hashem livado [Shmos 22:19]). Yosef felt a person should be a loner and grow spiritually through inner contemplation, having as little interaction with the outside world as possible, because that just takes away from a person’s personal growth. This is what the Torah means when it refers to Yosef as “Nezir Echav” [Bereshis 49:26] (which may be translated as ‘the nazirite amongst his brothers’). A Nazir is really someone who is outside of society. He does not drink wine; he does not cut his hair; he does not go to funerals. He is separated. He is holy — distinct from the rest of his peers.

YISSOCHER FRAND: Yehudah agreed to Yosef’s approach and Yosef acknowledged that there was a time and place for Yehudah’s approach; therefore, the Children of Yaakov were able to merge into a unified people. A merging of differing philosophies creates a strong nation.

Rona Shapiro: Joseph is about our past, and the Torah is telling us that we cannot move forward without bringing our past with us.
