MICHAEL FREUND: Ezekiel is commanded by God to take two sticks. On one, he is to write "For Judah," and on the other "For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim." Then comes the crucial instruction: "Bring them together into one stick so that they become one in your hand" (37:17). Ezekiel's vision is not one of uniformity. The two sticks do not cease to be what they are. Judah remains Judah; Joseph remains Joseph. Unity does not erase difference – it sanctifies and elevates it by placing it within a larger shared destiny.

Ketriel Blad: In other words, in order for a total restoration to take place, the restored Ephraimites from among the nations will have to become Jewish, in the legal sense of the word, thus accepting the Jewish authorities and becoming obedient to Jewish halachah. In the prophecy of Ezekiel 37:19 the Hebrew text can be understood as HaShem giving Yehuda's stick the function of being over Ephraim's stick and this way both sticks will become one. This teaches us that the Ephraimite movement that comes from heaven cannot rise apart from the Jewish people without submission to the Jewish leaders' authority. This is not for all the gentiles.

I am biding my time to leave America. My disgust began a long time ago, but sometimes you have to just stick it out. I have this fantasy of witnessing America Implode and that’s partly why I don’t flee. It’s a twisted attraction to danger like when you happen upon a Skyscraper on fire and take a photograph. As the only poet in the extended family, I have that luxury to critique deteriorating conditions for them, in cryptic ways only they can understand. If I am not happy, I contribute to the destruction, occasionally, in little ways. Hardly noticeable. Thanks to their conventional diligence, they make my simple life in America fairly pleasant, after all, while I seek vengeance. Makes for a good partnership. An artist’s legacy can be really fruitful, over generations. They are clearly aware of their meager investment in me, I suppose. Over occasional dinner parties, we’ll share observations of American Tyranny. Trivial incidents at the airport and such, then back to our routine, respectively, until the Shiite hits the Fannie Mae. Family in Business are aware of America’s dwindling prospects, but we can afford to fly on a moment’s notice. Most Americans can’t. And my family flock together. Our migration is gradual and doesn’t seem as dramatic as Walter Benjamin, yet, we are not ignorant of the discomfort. I am totally cognizant of the reality of being like Zelig infiltrating an increasingly Fascist America. Scholars, Colleagues, and Clergy know that I, for one, am clearly not pleased, in writing especially. I know full well that I’m going to have enough content for several books to be published with residuals. And these days, I don’t have to print all my poems out and collate like crazy. I can wait, while I archive scathing indictments that are piling up to high heaven.

At the time when Ephraim were at war with the Israelites of Gilead, under the leadership of Jephthah, the pronunciation of shibboleth as sibboleth was considered sufficient evidence to single out individuals from Ephraim, so that they could be subjected to immediate death by the Israelites of Gilead.
